Most of my working life has been spent trying to make positive change for animals. But one of my personal interests is travel. I have been to a few places including a bit of Europe, Australia, Turkey (twice because I liked it so much), and most recently three whole months in Africa (just last year). During those three months I spent a bit of time (it turned out that it wasn't enough, I left wanting to do more) doing some volunteer work in an elephant sanctuary. Nope - not working with the elephants, building a bridge! Very hot manual labour in Kenya. And I loved every minute of it. The time we spent working with the locals and visiting their villages and schools had a huge impact on me. It has made me want to learn more about the difference I can make farther afield than helping the animals in the City in which I live. That is why I have decided to take this course. I need to learn more about all the different people in the world and what impact I can have as an individual.
The photos are from my Africa trip - the sculpture is a momument in Zanzibar that commemorates the slave trade. It was very impactful.
Three websites I find interesting are:
www.globalincidentmap.com - not particularly uplifting but an interesting look at world happenings
http://www.reliefweb.int/rw/dbc.nsf/doc100?OpenForm - more positive with opportunities
www.chapters.indigo.ca - love to read
